むかしベルギーにあったブラバントという国にハインリヒという王さまがやってきました。ハンガリーと戦うために、仲間を集めにきたのです。ところがブラバントには王さまがいません。なぜかとたずねるハインリヒ王に、ブラバントの貴族テルラムントは、エルザ王女が弟のゴットフリート王子を殺したのだと説明します。テルラムントは魔法使いの妻オルトルートにそそのかされて、自分が王さまになろうとたくらんでいたのです。そこでテルラムントとエルザのどちらが正しいのか、神さまの前で決めることにしました。エルザはひとりの騎士が自分の代わりにテルラムントと戦ってくれると言います。すると、白鳥に引かれた小舟にのって騎士があらわれました。騎士は、決して自分の名前をたずねないようにと、エルザに言いました。騎士はかんたんにテルラムントをやっつけました。エルザは正しいことが証明されて、騎士と結婚することになりました。
ところが、テルラムントとオルトルートはあきらめません。オルトルートはエルザに近づいて、騎士との約束をやぶらせようとします。騎士がいったい誰なのか、エルザの胸にうたがいの気もちがふくらんできました。結婚式がおわり、騎士とエルザが二人きりになったとき、エルザは不安になって、ついに名前をたずねてしまいます。そこへテルラムントが剣をもっておそってきたので、騎士はテルラムントを殺してしまいました。
さて、ハインリヒ王の前にみんなが集まりました。騎士はエルザが約束をやぶって自分の名前をたずねたので、もうここには居られないと言います。そして、自分は神さまの聖なる杯をまもる騎士ローエングリンだと名のりました。みんなびっくりしてしまいました。でもオルトルートはまんまとエルザに約束をやぶらせて、よろこびの声をあげました。迎えにきた白鳥を見て、ローエングリンは気がつきます。白鳥はオルトルートの魔法によって姿を変えられたゴットフリート王子だったのです。ローエングリンが祈りをささげると、白鳥は王子の姿に戻りました。オルトルートは悲鳴をあげて、たおれてしまいます。ローエングリンはひとり去っていきました。王子がもどったことをみんなが喜ぶなか、エルザだけは深い悲しみに沈むのでした。
