シャルル・ケクランは、パリ音楽院でマスネやフォーレに師事し、19世紀末から20世紀初頭にかけて活動したフランスの作曲家。《20のブルターニュの歌》は1931～32年にかけて作曲。それぞれ1、2分の非常に短い曲だが、遠い古の世界に誘われるような不思議な印象をうける。ケルトのドルイド（祭司）やアーサー王伝説など、ブルターニュにまつわる様々な史実や伝承に材を得ている。
ドビュッシー：《前奏曲集 第1集》 より 沈める寺
ドビュッシーの2集からなる《前奏曲集》は、小品集でありながら作曲語法の先駆的な試みや美しさにおいて、ドビュッシー後期の重要作品とされている。第1集（全12曲）は1909～10年にかけて書かれた。その第10曲「沈める寺」は、ブルターニュに伝わるケルト族の伝説をもとにしている。鐘の音が海面に鈍く響くところから始まり、霧が晴れるとともに伽藍が海上に姿を現す場面は、荘厳な美しさを放つ。
ディーリアス：チェロ・ソナタ
フレデリック・ディーリアスは、19世紀末から20世紀初頭にかけて活動したイギリスの作曲家。1903年に結婚したあとは、パリにほど近いグレ＝シュル＝ロワンで生涯を送った。この単一楽章のチェロ・ソナタは1916年、著名なイギリスの女性チェロ奏者ベアトリス・ハリスンのために作曲した、ディーリアス円熟期の作品。気ままに移ろうように、無限に紡ぎ出されていく旋律は、深い優しさを湛えている。
