Toshyuki Shibata(Romantic Flute)

Flutist based in Paris. After performing with leading orchestras such as the Brussels Philharmonic and Chamber Orchestra of Belgium, he turned his focus to the world of early music. Since then, he has appeared with many of Europe’s foremost period ensembles, including La Petite Bande, Il Fondamento, Vox Luminis, BachPlus, and Le Concert Lorrain.

In 2019, he appeared as a soloist with Belgium’s B’Rock Orchestra during its first Japan tour, and in 2023 he was invited to give a recital at the Thuringen Bachwochen one of Germany’s three major Bach festivals. In 2025, he released Flute Sonatas by Bach and His Sons (Channel Classics) with keyboard virtuoso Anthony Romaniuk. The album was selected as a Specially Recommended Disc by The Record Geijutsu magazine, featured as “De Keuze van Klara” (Album of the Week) on Belgium’s national classical radio VRT Klara, and praised by Gramophone for “Shibata gives us a blink-and-you’d-miss-it series of solo flute somersaults. These sound thoroughly in CPE Bach’s language (…)”
Until 2018, he served as a researcher at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp Library, or Research Center for Flemih Music. Since 2017, he has been the Artistic Director of Musica Antiqua Takamatsu, International Early Music Festival.
Following the pandemic, he has expanded his activities in Japan, collaborating with fortepiano player Kikuko Ogura, harpsichordist Shin’ichiro Nakano, and guitarist Daisuke Suzuki, among others.
Since January 2025, he has been teaching flauto traverso at the Early Music Department of CRR Aubervilliers (Conservatoire à Rayonnement Départemental d’Aubervilliers–La Courneuve) in France and at City Conservatory in Brugge (Stedelijk Conservatorium in Brugge) in Belgium.
