Thom Janssen(Piano)

Thom Janssen studied piano with Jaap Spaanderman, Jan Wijn and Herman Uhlhorn. He finished his studies in Utrecht, where he was awarded the music performance diploma with distinction. Thom Janssen majored in music theory as well as piano. Later he specialized in Lied accompaniment with Rudolf Jansen, Martin Isepp and Helmut Deutsch.

He also studied at the Franz Schubert Institute in Baden bei Wien, took part in Robert Holl's international Schubert masterclass and was invited to study at the Académie Musicale de Villecroze in southern France. He has accompanied at masterclasses given by Elly Ameling, Hans Hotter, Walter Berry and Wolfgang Holzmair.

Thom Janssen gives solo recitals and performs with various ensembles and orchestras. For several years he was a member of the Basho ensemble, which specializes in contemporary music. He held a position as musical leader with Opera SKON for some time, accompanying the company on various tours throughout Europe with operas including Die Zauberflöte, Carmen and Die Kluge.

As a pianist with the Netherlands Chamber Choir, the Netherlands Radio Choir and the choir of the Netherlands Opera, he has worked with conductors such as Bernhard Haitink, Ricardo Chailly, Ivan Fischer, and Yevgeny Svetlanov.

He has accompanied for renowned competitions such as the Reine Elisabeth Concours in Brussels, the Mozarteum Competition in Salzburg and the ARD-Wettbewerb in Munich.

Thom is a frequent guest performer at various festivals such as the Delft Chamber Music Festival, Galway Festival and the Haaglanden Festival and has made radio and television recordings for the Dutch Radio 4, BBC 3, Bavarian Radio and National Belgian Radio.

Thom Janssen was a professor of piano at the Alkmaar Conservatorium for several years, and is now teaching at the Royal Conservatorium in The Hague. He frequently serves as one of judges adjudicating piano competitions such as the Steinway and Petrov Competitions in the Netherlands.
