Katrin Wundsam(Mezzo-Soprano)

Katrin Wundsam has already made a name for herself at leading opera houses, concert halls and international festivals. The Austrian mezzo-soprano has appeared at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, the Semperoper Dresden, the Hamburg State Opera, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Vienna Musikverein, the Bregenz Festival, the Salzburg Easter Festival, the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music and in Grafenegg.

Katrin works with some of the world’s most renowned conductors, including Daniel Barenboim, Alfred Eschwé, Adam Fischer, Markus Poschner, François-Xavier Roth and Christian Thielemann. Under the direction of Marek Janowski, she recorded Hänsel in HÄNSEL UND GRETEL at the Berlin Philharmonie for Pentatone.
Katrin has recently expanded her repertoire to include several iconic Wagner roles. In 2023 she sang her first Fricka in DAS RHEINGOLD at the Dresden Music Festival with Kent Nagano. This was followed by Fricka in DIE WALKÜRE, as well as the First Norn and Waltraute in DIE GÖTTERDÄMMERUNG at the Staatstheater Wiesbaden and the May Festival in 2024. She also made her role debut as Magdalene in DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NÜRNBERG at the Tokyo Spring Festival under the baton of Marek Janowski. Among her recent engagements was her first Ježibaba, which she performed on the same evening as the Foreign Princess in a new production of RUSALKA at the Staatstheater Wiesbaden to great acclaim, earning her a nomination as Singer of the Year by the renowned German magazine Opernwelt.

In the opening weeks of the Theater an der Wien, Katrin Wundsam also appeared as Lola in Kreisler’s HEUTE ABEND: LOLA BLAU, as the Garderobiere and Gymnasiast in a new production of LULU at the Wiener Festwochen, and on the concert stage in A MUSICAL SLEIGH RIDE with the Munich Symphony Orchestra as well as in Mozart’s REQUIEM with the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra.

Her most recent engagements in the 2024/25 season include the Foreign Princess in RUSALKA at the Hanover State Opera as well as at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf, Mahler’s DAS LIED VON DER ERDE at the Allegro Vivo Festival in Austria, Bach’s ST. MATTHEW PASSION at the Tyrolean Festival in Erl, Berio’s FOLK SONGS with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie at the Musikfest Saar, and Hänsel in HÄNSEL UND GRETEL at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
Future engagements in 2025/26 include, among others, her debut as Venus in Wagner’s TANNHÄUSER in Bad Homburg, Beethoven’s NINTH SYMPHONY as part of the New Year’s concerts of the Duisburg Philharmonic under Stefan Blunier, Mahler’s DAS LIED VON DER ERDE at the Tonhalle St. Gallen under Modestas Pitrenas, and her eagerly anticipated debut in the title role of Pascal Dusapin’s opera PENTESILEA at the Hanover State Opera under Stephan Zilias.
Katrin Wundsam had a close relationship with the Cologne Opera House, where she was a member of the ensemble from 2009 to 2016, performing roles such as Carmen, Lola Blau, Nicklausse / LES CONTES D’HOFFMANN, Suzuki / MADAMA BUTTERFLY, Preziosilla / LA FORZA DEL DESTINO, Sesto / LA CLEMENZA DI TITO,
Penelope / IL RITORNO D’ULISSE IN PATRIA and Bradamante / ALCINA.

/ RIGOLETTO at the Bregenz Festival, Enea / DIDONE ABBANDONATA at the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music, the Foreign Princess / RUSALKA at the Cologne Opera House, Stravinsky’s LES NOCES and Schumann’s REQUIEM FÜR MIGNON at the Vienna Musikverein, Beethoven’s NINTH SYMPHONY at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, and ZWEIMAL DURCHS HERZ at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg.
Katrin Wundsam grew up in Neustift, Austria, and studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. She began her career in the ensemble of the Stadttheater Passau, where she performed roles such as Bradamante / ORLANDO FURIOSO, Miss Jessel / THE TURN OF THE SCREW and Anaide / IL CAPPELLO DI PAGLIA DI FIRENZE.
