2020年、バンベルク交響楽団のマーラー国際指揮者コンクールで第1位を獲得して世界的に注目を浴びるようになった。審査員には「これ以上ないくらい自然に、まさに魔法のような瞬間を引き出す能力」を持った「率直さと才気とのめずらしい組み合わせ」と評された。

Finnegan came to international attention in 2020, when he was awarded first prize at the Bamberger Symphoniker's International Mahler Competition. The jury spoke of his 'rare combination of open heart and brilliant mind', with 'an ability to evoke truly magical moments as if there were nothing more natural to do'.

22／23年シーズンは、ヤナーチェク《マクロプロス事件》でベルリン国立歌劇場にデビュー、コンサートではシュターツカペレ・ベルリンとの共演も予定されている。また、カメラータ・ザルツブルク、ベルリン・ドイツ交響楽団、タンペレ・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団、アデレード交響楽団、ボルティモア交響楽団、ボーンマス交響楽団、ポーランド国立放送交響楽団、東京都交響楽団等のオーケストラにもデビューする他、エーテボリ交響楽団と再び共演する。
最近の重要な活動としては、ロンドン・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団、バーゼル交響楽団、ボローニャ歌劇場フィルハーモニー、ボルサン・イスタンブール・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団、BBCウェールズ交響楽団等の指揮が挙げられる。21年にはバンベルクに戻り、定期演奏会でトーマス・ハンプソンと共演した。今後のシーズンには、コヴェント・ガーデンのロイヤル・オペラ・ハウスとアン・デア・ウィーン劇場での新制作を指揮する予定がある。
これまで指揮したオペラは、ポーランド国立歌劇場で《死の都》、ライン・ドイツ・オペラと韓国国立オペラで《ヘンゼルとグレーテル》、スウェーデン王立歌劇場で《フィガロの結婚》、ネヴィル・ホルト・オペラで《ドン・ジョヴァンニ》、ロイヤル・オペラ・ハウスでジェラルド・バリー《地下の国のアリス》等が挙げられる。
14年から、イースト・ロンドンにある音楽劇カンパニー「シャドウェル」の音楽監督を務めており、優れた若手ミュージシャンたちと、現代イギリスのレパートリーを守りつつ、新しいオペラの形式を試している。同カンパニー制作のオリヴァー・ナッセン《かいじゅうたちのいるところ》は、19年にサンクトペテルブルクのマリインスキー劇場、22年にバンベルク交響楽団との共演でバンベルクへとツアーで回った。
ロンドンに生まれ、ケンブリッジ大学（音楽学）と英国王立音楽院（ピアノ）を優秀な成績で卒業した後、シモーネ・ヤング、トーマス・アデス、サー・サイモン・ラトル、ダニエル・ハーディング、リチャード・ベイカーのアシスタントを務めた。

In the 22/23 season he will debut at the Staatsoper Berlin (Janáček The Makropulos Case) as well as working with the Staatskapelle Berlin in concert. He will also debut with orchestras including Camerata Salzburg, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Tampere Philharmonic and the Adelaide, Baltimore, Bournemouth, Polish National Radio and Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestras, as well as returning to the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.
Recent important engagements include the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Sinfonieorchester Basel, Filarmonica di Bologna, Borusan Philharmonic Istanbul and BBC National Orchestra of Wales. In 2021, he returned to Bamberg for subscription concerts with Thomas Hampson.

Born in London, Finnegan graduated with distinction from Cambridge University (musicology) and the Royal Academy of Music (piano). He subsequently worked as an assistant to Simone Young, Thomas Adès, Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Harding and Richard Baker.
