Adrian Eröd(Baritone)

For years, the Austrian baritone Adrian Eröd has thrilled audiences and the press alike at his home opera house, the Vienna State Opera, with his versatility in a wide variety of roles, be it as Prospero in Thomas Adès' The Tempest, as the music teacher in Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos or as Sixtus Beckmesser in Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, with which he has also appeared in Bayreuth, Zurich, Cologne, Leipzig, Tokyo, Amsterdam and - under the direction of Christian Thielemann - in Dresden and at the Salzburg Easter Festival.

His portrayal of Loge in the Vienna production of Wagner's Das Rheingold caused an international sensation, while he also celebrated success as Shylock in the world premiere of André Tchaikovsky's The Merchant of Venice at the Bregenz Festival and made his debut at the Salzburg Festival as Faninal in Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier in Harry Kupfer's production.

Since his debut at the Vienna State Opera as Mercutio in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette, Adrian Eröd has sung roles such as Guglielmo (Così fan tutte), Conte Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), Figaro (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Billy Budd, Pelléas, Valentin (Faust), Albert (Werther), Frank/Fritz (Die tote Stadt), Olivier and Count (Capriccio), Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus), the lead male role of Jason in the world premiere of Aribert Reimann's Medea, composed specifically for him, and Prospero in the Austrian premiere of Thomas Adès' The Tempest under the direction of the composer himself. In addition to the Vienna State Opera, he appeared at the Semperoper in Dresden, Berlin State Opera, La Scala in Milan and the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, the Opéra de Paris, Teatro Real in Madrid, Houston Grand Opera and Chicago Lyric Opera, Hamburg State Opera, Frankfurt Opera and the Tokyo National Opera.


Parallel to his opera career, Adrian Eröd has achieved great success on the concert stage. He has appeared with Riccardo Muti and the Vienna Philharmonic, Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic, with notable performances including Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion under Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Zemlinsky’s Lyric Symphony under Christian Thielemann, Orff’s Carmina Burana under Fabio Luisi and Alain Altinoglu, Brahms’ German Requiem under Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla and Helmut Rilling, with Bach’s St. John Passion under Philippe Jordan, Mahler’s Eighth Symphony under Andris Nelsons, Fauré’s Requiem with Myung-Whun Chung and Mendelssohn’s Elijah under Marek Janowski. Additional appearances have included engagements at the Suntory Hall Tokyo, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Philharmonie in Berlin, Gewandhaus in Leipzig, Madrid’s Auditorio Nacional, Vienna’s Musikverein and Konzerthaus, the Lucerne Festival, Salzburg Mozartwoche, and the Styriarte Festival in Graz.

As a devoted lied singer, Adrian Eröd has appeared at venues including the Vienna and Graz Musikverein, the Brucknerhaus in Linz, the Liszt Centre Raiding, the Tokyo Spring Festival and the Carinthian Summer festival. His recordings include songs by Franz Liszt and Schubert's Winterreise, while his most recent solo album entitled "Berührungspunkte" (Points of Contact) will soon be released on the Quinton Records label, alongside works by Mozart and Schubert as well as songs by Egon Wellesz and Aribert Reimann.
