Joanne Evans(Contralto)

London-born mezzo-soprano Joanne Evans is a graduate of the Merola Opera Program and of residencies at the Ravinia Steans Music Institute, the Britten Pears Young Artist Program, Fondation des Treilles, and the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, where she received Le Prix des Amis for Voice.

An Artist in Residence with Opera San Jose for the 2025–26 season, she recently made her role debut as Dorabella and will return as Flora Bervoix in La Traviata, a role she has also sung with Annapolis Opera. Upcoming engagements include appearances with the Opéra Comique, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and Ensemble Intercontemporain at the Tokyo Spring Festival.
A frequent collaborator on new music, Joanne has premiered four vocal-orchestral works at the Aldeburgh Festival and four new songs at the Ear Taxi Festival for the Ravinia Steans Institute.
As Olga in Eugene Onegin at Music Academy of the West, she won the Marilyn Horne Song Competition, leading to a commission from Tom Cipullo (Aubade with a Chance of Rain), later recorded on Laduga Records. She won first prize in the 2022 Handel Aria Competition, was a Boston District winner in the 2022 Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition, and is supported by Career Bridges, the Gerda Lissner Foundation, and the Premiere Opera Foundation. She was a finalist in the 2025 Dallas Opera Lone Star Competition.
A former Artist-in-Residence at Opera Colorado, she appeared as Lucienne in Die tote Stadt and Maddalena in Rigoletto.
With singer-conductor Micah Gleason, she co-founded Loam Music, whose current project is Daughter of God, a new one-woman chamber opera workshopped at the Curtis Institute of Music in 2024.
