日本語を話せなくて申し訳ないですが、コンサートの前に、一言だけお話ししたいと思います。 まず、18回目の「東京・春・音楽祭」のオープニングを飾ることができ、大変嬉しいです。 この素晴らしい祭典の主催者にお祝いを申し上げます。

次に、数日前にシカゴ交響楽団の指揮台からも申し上げましたが、世界の劇的な状況の中で音楽を演奏することは、我々や特に若い音楽家にとって非常に困難なことです。
もちろん、ウクライナのことを考えています。

ベートーヴェンが音楽に込めたように、音楽は、調和、美、平和、兄弟愛をもたらすはずです。
その一方で、罪のない人々が殺されていることや、女性、男性、子供から、自由、誠実さ、尊厳が奪われていることを知りながら、音楽を奏でることは困難です。
どんな状況であっても音楽を絶やしてはいけません。

そして、このような困難な状況にもかかわらず、皆様がここに来てくれた。
そして、先日の強い地震に私も遭遇しました。それでも皆様がここに来てくれた。
そして、私たちは皆様のために演奏し、ウクライナの人々のために演奏し、苦しんでいる世界中のすべての人々のために演奏します。

皆様は、ジュゼッペ・ヴェルディの《シモン・ボッカネグラ》の音楽をご存じだと思います。
シモンは泣いてこう言います。

E vo gridando: amor!

私は「平和を！」と叫びながら進んで行く
私は「愛を！」と叫びながら進んで行く

必死に求め、平和と愛を手に入れるために泣いているのです。

この精神と共に、私たちは皆様のために演奏します。
若いオーケストラ、若い音楽家の存在は、より良い未来への希望です。

Before the concert, I am sorry I don’t speak Japanese yet.
But before the concert, I want to say just a few words.
First, it’s a great pleasure for me to open the 18th edition of the Spring Festival in Tokyo, and I want to congratulate the organizer of this wonderful festival.

Second thing, it’s very difficult, as I say that from the podium of Chicago Symphony Orchestra few days ago, it’s very difficult for us, and especially for the young musicians to play music in a dramatic situation in the world. Then I am thinking, of course to Ukraine.

Music brings, or supposes to bring harmony, beauty, peace, as brotherhood, as Beethoven put in music. It’s difficult to play music when we know in the meantime when innocent people are killed. And other people take away from women and men and children, freedom, integrity, dignity.
In any case music must go on.
And the fact that you are here, despite the difficult situation, And I experienced with you a strong earthquake, but still you are here. And we will play for you, we will play for people of Ukraine and all the people in the world that are suffering.
You know, am sure that many of you, know the music of Verdi, Giuseppe Verdi and Simon Boccanegra, Simone cries and says,

E vo gridando: pace!
E vo gridando: amor!

And asking desperately, and I am crying to have peace, to have love. With this spirit we will play for you.
I want to say for that presence of young orchestra, young musicians is good hope for better future. Thank you.
